Pastries that are made by nuns and served in a top-secret style!
Just a few corners away from Plaza Mayor lies one of Madrid’s famous monasteries, Monasterio del Corpus Christi. However it is not famous for being a historic place of worship, but instead for the delicious cookies the inhabitants still bake by hand.
The twist?
Nobody is allowed to see the nuns. They are shielded from society and do not come face-to-face with any of their customers. Instead they operate their business through a window with a turntable. You go up and order your cookies, the selection is posted on the wall beside it. A disembodied voice will tell you your total, which you then place in the open slot in front of you. The turntable is moved from the inside and once the rotation is complete you will find a bag filled with baked goods in front of you.
This experience will connect you with Madrid’s history and traditions as all of the cookies that are made by the nuns are typical Spanish recipes. It feels like stepping back in time and honouring the most special form of appreciation.
