By now I believe I have figured out the ins and outs of sports photography, what settings to use and what moments to look out for because they might lead to the perfect shot. Of course there is room for improvement and I look forward to more photography lessons but so far I have had a couple opportunities and I am quite proud of the results.
But yesterday I was faced with a new challenge: Basketball. I had never gone to see a basketball game in person before and even on TV I don’t tend to keep up with the sport much. So being sent to the Real Madrid vs Bilbao game as a photographer was a little tricky. However I love a rising to an occasion.
I arrived at the Movistar Arena very early to also be able to capture the warm-ups. This was where I was allowed right next to the court and I think some of my best pictures ever were taken:
Then I moved to the middle of the seating area – the exclusive area for EURM photography students.
I added a larger lens and that worked out so well. The action was crystal clear through it and I was able to still capture picture despite the geographic disadvantage. The game was really good, high intensity and a lot of back and forth. In the end Real Madrid was able to clench the win.
I had a really great time at my first basketball game and I will definitely enjoy going back for all other roles in the future.
