Through My Lens: The Women Who Wear the White Shirt

Match day photography for Real Madrid’s Femeninos

As someone who loves to watch women succeed and thrive in sports I was thrilled to get the opportunity to watch a match by Real Madrid’s women’s team. I was invited as a photographer again and after also having my first photography class this week I was pumped and excited to be even better than at the Castilla game last Saturday. I was not…. I was given an insane camera lens that was very hard to operate. It was also insanely heavy and I started questioning my own physical strength by halftime. It was really hard to get the zoom right because it was operated not by a button but by pushing the lens up or down and the camera wouldn’t focus for a while whilst the zoom was in motion. So with a fast paced object like the ball or athletes it was a little tricky to actually take solid pictures. However(!) I did manage to take some that turned out beautiful and I did get to enjoy a great game of football. The women dominated the match and ended up winning 5:0.

I was also so happy to watch one of my favourite players in person: Sara Däbritz. She is also from Germany and plays for our national team. She is a really strong midfielder and she showed off her talents during the match. I managed to get a couple of good shots of her:

I was also lucky to capture a couple of the goal celebrations (there were so many, luckily). This one in particular was of the first goal:

This one was after the third goal. I like this one because it also features the opposing side’s goalkeeper on the floor and showcases the highs and lows of the sport depending on your point of view:

Here is another celebration picture after the 4:0. We were lucky that the girls didn’t run to the bench to celebrate but stayed right in front of us:

I was also able to get a really good shot of Pau C. leaving the pitch after her substitution and her high-fiving her teammate Yasmim:
